What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A UTI is an infection in any part of the urinary system—usually the bladder or urethra. It’s caused by bacteria, most commonly E. coli, entering the urinary tract. UTIs are especially common in women and can happen after sex, holding in urine, or improper hygiene.
If untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and cause more serious health issues.
