What is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS). It spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact.

Unlike viral sore throats, strep often comes on suddenly and may involve fever, swollen tonsils, and white patches. Children and teens are most commonly affected, but adults can get it too.

Left untreated, strep can lead to complications like:
  • Scarlet fever
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Ear or sinus infections
  • Spread to other parts of the body
