What is HPV (Human Papillomavirus)?

HPV is a group of over 200 related viruses, more than 40 of which are transmitted through sexual contact and affect the genital area, mouth, or throat. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally. Some types cause genital warts, while others can lead to cervical, throat, anal, or penile cancer if left untreated.

Most people who are sexually active will get HPV at some point—often without ever knowing it. In most cases, the body clears the virus on its own within 1–2 years.

What are the Symptoms of HPV?

Most people with HPV do not have symptoms. But certain types can cause:

  • Genital warts: Flesh-colored bumps in the genital, anal, or groin area
  • Abnormal Pap smear results in women
  • Persistent HPV infections that can lead to cervical or other cancers
  • Throat or anal symptoms in those exposed via oral or anal sex
  • Routine screening and follow-up are essential for early detection.

Medication & Treatment Options

Manage Symptoms:

  • Genital Warts Treatment: Topical medications (Imiquimod, Podofilox), cryotherapy(freezing), or surgical removal (referred if needed)
Understand Test Results:
  • Review of abnormal Pap or HPV test results
  • Guidance on colposcopy or biopsy referrals if needed

Prevent Future Infections:

HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9):
  • Protects against 9 high-risk strains
  • Recommended for ages 9 to 45
  • Effective even after HPV exposure (for additional strain protection)
Important Reminders:
  • Regular Pap smears & HPV testing are essential
  • Genital warts do not always mean cancer risk
  • Most HPV infections clear naturally—treatment focuses on monitoring and preventing complications
